The JNZ High Performance Director has announced the introduction of a JNZ Points Ranking List for each category. These ranking lists will form the basis for selections into National Teams - amongst other uses.

2010 Commonwealth Championships Success

New Zealand only had one representative at this year's Commonwealth Championships held in Singapore recently. Perth based Lee Bronkhorst competed in the combined -50 / -56kg category in both the Junior Mens and Senior Mens diivisions, gaining bronze medals in both. Congratulations Lee.

New IJF Competition Rules - Update

While recently attending the IJF World Masters event in Suwon, Korea as an invited referee, JNZ President David Browne attended the referees meeting where the main point of discussion centred on the new publicised hansokumake interpretations, particularly those involving a cross-grip.

In addition to being instructed to award shido if a cross-grip is taken and not immediately used to attack (ie; no 5 second allowance as for other non-standard grips), the IJF Referees Commission advise that the following examples from the 60 Clip Video Samples (refer previous news item) are now to be excluded; 23,25,27,29,31,39,40,44,46,47,49,50,51,53.

New International Rule Changes

The IJF have anounced further changes to the contest rules to apply from 1 January, 2010. The controversial changes result in direct Hansoku-make for certain techniques applied with the hands to the opponents legs. A link to videos of examples of the application of the new rules on the IJF website is attached.

2009 Dan Grade Promotions

NZL Success At OJU World Cup

A team of 22 competed at the first OJU World Cup event held recently in Samoa. 15 of the 22 gained 5th place or better. 16 countries competed, including China, Russia, and Brazil.

JNZ has commissioned a short series of "human interest" style articles highlighting our sport, which will be included in a program entitled "Olympic Show; All In The Games".
We have specifically requested that they portray certain segments of our membership that need promotion - such as female, teenage years, the fact that Judo can be enjoyed by a wide range of ages from the "peewees" to the "Grand Master" age groups, as well as some coverage of sport Judo (including past and present success stories).

JNZ "Fight For Gold" Campaign

The 2009 Nationals saw the launch of the "Fight For Gold" campaign aimed at securing podium finishes for our athletes at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Past Commonwealth Games Judo medalists were honoured with the unveiling of banners commemorating their success, and another banner challenges our up and coming athletes to work hard to become our next Commonwealth Games medalists in Glasgow.

Murray Boase Honoured by Sports Manawatu

Murray Boase was recognised at the inaugural Grassroots Sports Awards held by Sport Manawatu on Friday evening (October 9) at the Palmerston North Convention Centre. The awards encompassed the Sports Clubs of the Year Awards and the Volunteer Coach of the Year Awards and it is the first time that these awards functions have been combined.

The 2009 Judo New Zealand Congress unanimously approved the following awards for outstanding service to our sport over a long period of time.

JNZ Life Memberships were awarded to Ivan Willis (Auckland) & Patrick Toner (Wellington).

Elizabeth Crosbie (Canterbury) and Brent Cooper (Auckland) were made Honorary Officers of JNZ.

Tokoroa Judo Club Fun Day
