NZL Team For 2011 OJU World Cup

A small NZL team have accepted their selection to compete at the 2011 OJU World Cup to be held in Apia, Samoa on 11-12 November.

The level of competition is expected to be very high this year, with many athletes chasing IJF World Ranking points to qualify for next year's Olympics. To date 22 countries have advised entries.

Applications For Selection Invited

Applications are requested from those wishing to be considered for selection to compete in the 2012 Commonwealth Championships to be held in January in Cardiff, Wales.


Applications are available to members of the National Squad in the Cadet, Junior, and Senior Men and Women categories. Note that the deadline for applications is 20 October (with deposit) to the JNZ High Performance Director.

Success At Italian World Cup

Moira de Villiers (NJC AK) placed 5th at the Italian World Cup event held in Rome last weekend, losing her bronze medal fight by waza-ari to an Italian player.

Moira is demonstarting promising form after her second year at the Olympic Training facility in Paris, and hopefully this will continue as she competes in the Belarus World Cup this weekend, and then the OJU World Cup in Samoa, chasing vital wins for Olympic consideration.

 A small group of young players are currently training at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, with the Australian Cadet and Junior squads. They are in camp for 5 days, accompanied by coach Naomi Spinks (PHO CA).

JNZ welcomes another new club to East Coast Area - JUEC (Judo Unleashed East Coast). The club is affiliated now and will be based in Dannevirke under coach Hamish Rees.

Referee Grading

Craig Bartlett (HOW AK) recently sat and passed his IJF A referee licence in Sydney. Craig has been spending a lot of time recently refereeing at events around the world in preparation for his grading, which was awarded by IJF Head Referee Director Juan Barcos at the NSW Open.

TAGS Resource KIt On-Line

The Teaching and Grading Syllabus (TAGS) Resource Kit has been updated and is now available on-line. Most clubs will have received their kit when they attended the required briefings at various events earlier in the year. The kit is a resource designed to support the revised Teaching and Grading Syllabus that was also e-mailed to all clubs.

National Technical Examination Weekend

The 2011 NTEW is to be held in Auckland over the weekend of 1-2 October. A list of those eligible to sit their Dan grading has been sent to all clubs, along with the information and application form. The application form and information is also contained in the "Events" section on the website, and also as an attachment here.

Kapiti Judo Club Turns 40

Kapiti Judo Club (Wellington Area) recently celebrated their 40th anniversary. A full day of fun events and celebrations was scheduled, and a suitably good time was had by all.

Among the many guests were original coach Des Sharp, and current coach of 21 years Lloyd Tarrant who was presented with a painting of himself. Happy birthday Kapiti, and good luck for the next 40!

Young Kiwis Do Well In Singapore

A small team of NZ athletes competed at the Singapore International Open in the weekend. This event is for -20 and -17 divisions and was attended by players from 14 countries.

Results for our team of 5 included Anton Hammond (NJC AK) who won gold in the Cadet Men +81kg category, Joss Traub (KOI WN) silver in the Cadet Men -73, and Marco Nienaber bronze in the Junior Men -81kg.

Congratulations to the team.

Central Districts Training Day
