Funded Holiday Program
Wednesday, 05 February 2014 08:13

Westside Judo Club in Canterbury ran a holiday programme in the second to last week of the summer school holidays in association with Families and Communities Services.
19 children registered with many never having tried Judo before. The programme was free (funded by the Ministry of Social Development) for all the children to participate in and was run over four days. The children were taught the basics of Judo, along with self-defence techniques and how to proactively avoid placing themselves in danger of being attacked.
The programme was a great success and the children learnt good skills and had a great deal of fun.
As an Area, Canterbury is now looking at how it can take this holiday programme model and roll it out on a regular basis through other Judo clubs within Canterbury.

Thursday, 16 January 2014 08:16

Sean Choi (MET WB) was recently required to use some of his judo skills to assist in carrying out his duties in his new role with the NZ Police, based in Hamilton.

It appears Sean used self-restraint until he was forced to take sufficient action to prevent injury to himself and members of the public.

On their return they will hold Rules Seminars in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch at the end of January to share the information gained with registered members.

As these new rules will be used at the OJU Championships in April it is essential they are understood by players, coaches, referees and officials. The JNZ Sports Commission will be considering the implementation of these changes for the 2014 domestic events calendar.
