2018 Dan Gradings

JNZ would like to acknowledge our members who attained Dan Grades through out the year. 2018 resulted in 16 new black belts and 8 members attaining higher grades.

NZL Players Taste Success At OJU Open

JNZ had a relatively small team of 13 attend the recent OJU Open for Seniors and Juniors held in Perth, Australia.

Overall a medal haul of 5 gold, 3 silvers and 1 bronze was achieved.

Silver At World Veterans

At the 2018 IJF World Championships for Veterans in Cancun, Mexico - Vitaly Alliluev (UNI AK) won silver for New Zealand.

Vitaly came second in the M5 (-55y/o) category.  This impressive performance followed up his silver medal in Fort Lauderdale in 2016.

The 2018 World Championships for veterans had 45 countries represented, with 789 competitors fighting.

JNZ congratulates Vitaly on yet another impressive international achievement.

Dave Browne (National Technical Director) was refereeing at this event.

Rihari Off To The Youth Olympics

JNZ is pleased to announce that the New Zealand Olympic Committee has confirmed the selection of Rihari Iki (HOW AK) to attend the Youth Olympics to be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Rihari will fight in the combined men’s weight comprising the Under 73 kg and Under 81 kg categories.

Rihari will be accompanied by National Coach Kiki Velloza (GIS WB).

Also attending the games will be Craig Bartlett (HOW AK) as one of the IJF selected officiating referees.

We wish Rihari all the best!

Obituary - Peter Miles QSM

We regret to advise that Peter Miles (MAI CA) passed away on September 2nd, aged 89.

Peter became a Life Member of Judo NZ in 2006 having previously been an
Honorary Officer. These awards were testament of his long service to Judo NZ and judo in general.

During his long service to Judo Peter was active at club, area and national level.

Our condolence to Helen & family.

Obituary - Rick Littlewood

We regret to advise that Rick Littlewood passed away on July 24th aged 77. He will be sadly missed by his wife Yumiko and family and also his many judo colleagues & friends.

Rick started Judo in 1959 at Hastings Judo Club and during the next 5 years was also member of the Otago University Judo Club, Dunedin & Invercargill Judo Club whilst attending Dunedin Teachers Collage.

NZL Men Amoung The Medals In Hong Kong

The JNZ Cadet and Junior Development Team competed last weekend at the Hong Kong Asian Cup.

The men where among the medals with the following results.

Rihari Iki (HOW AK)  won 2nd place in the cadet and 3rd place in the Junior -81kg categories.

Keightley Watson (WAN NW) fighting in the +90 kg in the cadets and +100 kg in the Juniors won a bronze medal in each division.

We wish the team more success at the next event in Macau this coming weekend.

JNZ Welcomes Another New Club

JNZ is pleased to announce the affiliation of a new club - Hajamie Judo (HAJ AK) run by Jamie Hopson.

It is encouraging to see another club being run by a young woman, particularly in West Auckland which has been lacking a "judo presence" recently.

Youth Olympics Referee Appointment

Craig Barlett (HOW AK) has been selected by the IJF to referee at the upcoming Youth Olympics to be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

This is another milestone for both Craig and the achievements of NZL referees over a long period.

Congratulations Craig, and good luck for the event.

OJU Success For NZL Team

The NZL Team won 28 medals at the OJU Continental Championships held in Noumea - 9 gold, 11 silver, and 8 bronze.

A full list of NZL medallists is attached.

In addition, a number of athletes also stayed for the training camp run by former multiple world and Olympic champion David Douillet.

Congratulations to all NZL medallists.
