“do or not do - there is no try”
London Kiwi Judo Meal
Wednesday, 12 May 2010 17:11

On Saturday 8th of May 2010, a dinner was held in London, UK where two time Olympian Daniel Gowing met with Olympic hopeful Mahana Clutha.

The dinner was organised by Lance Wicks (EJU Level 5 Judo Coach) and was attended by a variety of supporters of New Zealand Judo, including former players from New Zealand and a British sport scientist keen to help Mahana as she trains full time in the UK. Mahana is fortunate that she has been allowed to train with the British Team at the multi-million dollar British Judo Performance Institute near London. She does not however have access to the funding and support that the local players do.

As well as being an enjoyable meal out with like minded Judoka and athletes from other sports, the meal was an opportunity to help gather some funds to support Mahana.

It was also an opportunity for Mahana, who wants to fight the Olympic games in 2012, to meet Daniel Gowing who fought in Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000. They were able to discuss elite level Judo, and life as an athlete thousands of miles from home. Sadly IJF A referee Craig Monahan, who had planned to attend, was unable to make the event.

A follow up event is already in the planning phase and it is hoped that even more ex-pat New Zealand Judoka will be able to attend a good night out and support Mahana’s effort to gain points in the highly competitive European Judo circuit.
