“do or not do - there is no try”
Obituary For Well Known Wellington Judo Identity
Monday, 25 July 2016 09:12

It is with sadness that we advise that Victor (Vic) Mawson (KOI WN) passed away on 17th July.

Vic became a member of JNZ from its incorporation in 1956 and remained a member since then.

Victor taught judo for generations and was practicing and teaching classes right up until last year – aged 95!

Messages of condolences can be sent to Vic's wife Denise, c/-  P.O.Box 30067, Lower Hutt.

Judo NZ extends its sympathies to Denise, family and friends of Vic Mawson.

Vic started his judo life in Ipswich, England in 1951 and three years later emmigrated to New Zealand with his wife, Denise.

On his arrival in NZ in 1954 Vic joined Koizumi Kwai Judo Club and trained alongside Des Tarring ever since.

A parent of a current junior member remembers being taught by Vic in the early 80’s and all of the coaches at Koizumi Kwai Judo Club (aside from Des Tarring ) were taught by Victor.

He was a mentor for many of us - not just in judo, but in life.

Our thoughts are with Denise, and also with his good mates Des and Beryl Tarring, Barry and Linda McDowell – who have been friends with Vic on and off the mat for so long.

Graeme Dunce (KOI WN)
