Outstanding OJU Results For Team NZL
Tuesday, 16 April 2013 12:37

The NZL Team performed very strongly at the 2013 OJU Continental Championships completed this weekend in Cairns, Australia.

The team of 43 athletes won a total of 35 medals between them, over the three divisions. This is the best medal hall for a NZL team at this event for quite some time (if not ever).

Of particular note, the Senior Mens and Womens squads were in devastating form.

Between them they took 8 of the 15 titles available, and finished with an additional 6 silver and 2 bronze medals. The men won the teams event, earning the right to represent Oceania at the World Teams Championships later this year. They also outperformed the Australians winning 4 golds to Australias 3. The Women were not far behind with 3 golds and a silver in the team event. This is the second consecutive Oceania event that the Seniors have outperformed the Australian team.

This is a significant step in the JNZ "Fight For Gold" campaign, as these athletes have earned vital IJF World Ranking points to assist in qualifying for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The Junior and Cadet teams also accredited themselves well, taking a total of 18 medals, including 2 titles.

The NZL medal haul is attached. Congratulations to the team on this outstanding achievement.
