NZL Feature In YOG Medals!

Haley Baxter (KAI CA) has gained a silver medal at the Youth Olympics as part of the successful Team Belgrade in the mixed country teams event at the Singapore Youth Olympics.

The mixed teams event is a unique innovation created specially for the Youth Olympics. Teams are created from all the competing athletes on a carefully determined set of criteria which mixes countries, gender, placings in individual categories, and weights to compete in the final event on the Judo program.

Teams were named after cities that have hosted Judo World Championships. Haley was selected to compete for Team Belgrade, along with players from Malta, Mongolia, Russia, Turkmenistan, Belgium, Germany, and Senegal. Her teammates included -78 gold medalist Lola Mansour, -52 silver medalist Anna Dmitrieva, and -100 bronze medalist Marius Piepke.

Team Belgrade had a bye in the first round, and then sneaked through round 2 with a 40-30 points win after a 4-4 win-loss record against Team Osaka. They then beat Team Tokyo 5-3 to make the final, where they lost 1-6 to gold medallist Team Essen.

Unfortunately Haley drew strong competition in each of her matches, losing to the -63kg bronze medallist, the -63kg 5th place getter, and then the -63kg gold medal winner - Miku Tashio in the final.

Haley will return with a Youth Oluympics silver medal, more international experience, and a lot of good memories. Congratulations Haley!
