“do or not do - there is no try”
Darcina's Bronze
Monday, 04 August 2014 13:17

Day 1 of the Glasgow CG Judo competition saw Chanel Kavanagh (TAU WB) and Darcina Manuel (GIS EC) in action. Both athletes lost their first round matches, but fortunately were seeded so were in the quarter finals which allowed them repechages.

Chanel (-48) lost round 1 against Barbados, and then to the Cameroon player.

Darcina (-57) lost by yuko to the eventual silver medalist from Scotland, then defeated Mauritius before beating World Cadet champion Jessica Klimkait (CAN) by shimewza to claim the first individual medal by a Kiwi at the Games. Her comment upon stepping off the mat was "I think that was OK?"

Certainly was Darcina!!!

Overall the team collected 31 medals, with 12 gold, 9 silver, and 10 bronze. Of particular note were the Senior Men and Women results which provided very valuable World Ranking Points to aid their selection chances for the Commonwealth Games.

The Senior Men dominated the division, winning all four titles from -81 up, and bronze in each of the other 2 categories in which we had entries. The Women picked up 2 titles, 3 silver, and a bronze.

Congratulations to all the NZL team and officials, and the local event organisers for a successful event.

Funded Holiday Program
Wednesday, 05 February 2014 08:13

Westside Judo Club in Canterbury ran a holiday programme in the second to last week of the summer school holidays in association with Families and Communities Services.
19 children registered with many never having tried Judo before. The programme was free (funded by the Ministry of Social Development) for all the children to participate in and was run over four days. The children were taught the basics of Judo, along with self-defence techniques and how to proactively avoid placing themselves in danger of being attacked.
The programme was a great success and the children learnt good skills and had a great deal of fun.
As an Area, Canterbury is now looking at how it can take this holiday programme model and roll it out on a regular basis through other Judo clubs within Canterbury.

Judo Skills Assist On The Job
Thursday, 16 January 2014 08:16

Sean Choi (MET WB) was recently required to use some of his judo skills to assist in carrying out his duties in his new role with the NZ Police, based in Hamilton.

It appears Sean used self-restraint until he was forced to take sufficient action to prevent injury to himself and members of the public.
