Howick Have-A-Go

Howick Academy of Judo (HOW AK) recently held a "have-a-go" day at the Budhist Temple in Botany, Auckland.

Head coach Lawrie Crooke stated that it was a tremendous success, and received feedback from the organisers that we have a "great martial art".

Hopefully the enthusiasm of those that took the opportunity to have a go will translate into more members for Howick Academy. Well done team Howick!

OJU Medal Success For NZL Team

The NZL team completed the 2015 OJU Championships over the weekend with a total medal hall of 27, including 4 gold, 10 silver, and 13 bronze.

The 2015 OJU Champions are Qona Christie (WEL WN) CW -52kg, Matthew Roley (JNH AK) JM -90kg, Moira de Villiers (CAN CA) SW -70kg, and Jason Koster (CAN CA) SM -100kg.

Congratulations to the team and officials.

NZL OJU Team To Compete This Weekend

A large NZL team has been selected to compete in Cadet, Junior, and Senior divisions at this year's OJU Continental Championships to be held in Noumea, New Caledonia.

The event begins Friday 10 April, and concludes Sunday 12 April with Veterans and Kata. The event is followed by a training camp featuring 2012 Olympic gold medallist and 3 times World Champion Lucie Decosse (France), as well as Olympic silver medallists Larbi Benboudauod and Noriko Mizogushi.

We understand that the event will be available on live-stream via the OJU website (access by clicking OJU logo at bottom of this page).

We wish the team well for the event. A team list is attached.

JNZ Welcomes New Club

Team UMAF Judo Club (TUJ CA) has just affiliated and will be run by long time member Kerry Saggers.

WB Camp a Huge Success

The WB Area's annual weekend Camp was hosted this year by Whaktane Judo Club. Around 115 Judoka attended on both days with ages ranging from 5 to 60yrs.

A full, fun program was provided (for more detail, Read More).

A massive thank you from the clubs in the WB Area to Kevin Mackey (WHA WB) and his team for their hard work in putting on this event.


Great Finish To South American Tour

The NZL team in South America finished on a high note with 2 podium finishes at the PanAmerican Open in Buenos Aires.

Moira de Villiers (CAN CA) picked up another bronze medal in the -70kg category, and Jason Koster (CAN CA) lost the final of the -100kg category to place second. Darcina Manuael (GIS EC) could not get past the Argentinian opposition.

De Villiers and Koster finished the tour with 2 bronze and a silver each, and with important World Ranking points and great form heading into next month's OJU Championships.

Canterbury Sports Award Success

The annual Marriotts-Hadlee Canterbury Sports Awards were recently held in Christchurch with Judo well represented amongst the finalists for five categories.  Making the top three finalist in their categories were:

Jason Koster – Sports Man of the Year, Coach of the Year

Moira de Villiers -  Sports Woman of the Year

Oisin Roberts - Junior Sportsman of the Year

Can Am Ju – Club of the Year

The highlight for Judo Canterbury was Can Am Ju winning the Canterbury Sports Club of the Year award. In addition, Liz Crosbie (CAN CA) also received recognition for her long and excellent work at club, Area, and National levels.

NZL Trio Continue Good Form

The NZL team currently touring South America have had another successful weekend - this time at the PanAmerican Open event in Montevideo.

Moira de Villiers (CAN CA) -70kg again won her pool, and then lost to the eventual champion in the semi-final, gaining bronze. Jason Koster (CAN CA) -100kg also won his pool, then lost to the eventual gold medallist and won his bronze medal fight.

Darcina Manuel (GIS EC) -57kg again lost to a Spaniard in the second round and couldn't get past the Argentian in the repecchage.

Well done team, and more valuable World Ranking points for Rio selection chances!

NZL Success in Chile

A small NZL team are currently competing in 3 international events in South America this month.

The first event was the PanAmerican Open in Santiago, Chile where Moira de Villiers (CAN CA), -70kg won her pool and semi-final, finishing with a silver medal. Jason Koster (CAN CA), -100 also won his pool, lost his semi-final to the eventual gold medallist, placing third.

Darcina Manuel (GIS EC) lost her second round fight to the eventual bronze medallist.

So congratulatuions team, and good luck for the next event.

Kapiti Judo Club Gets A Taste Of Japanaese Judo

Kapiti Judo Club had the privilege of Mr Toru Takeuchi, a visiting Japanese teacher from the Tokai University attend their club on 3rd February, while he visits with Kapiti College’s sister school.  He was accompanied by two students who participate in Judo at Tokai-Urayasu Junior High School.

Mr Takeuchi, coach for a top Japanese high school judo team, is a highly regarded judoka, holding a 6th Dan.  He teaches Physical Education, History and Social Studies at Tokai University plus Judo at the Urayasa High School which is associated with the university.

Loss Of An "Old Warhorse"

Former member Eric Onyon (4th Dan) passed away recently after a battle with cancer, aged 66.

Eric was recognised as an "uncompromising" competitor who represented New Zealand internationally, and was at one time National Mens Coach.

Eric was a long-time Cambridge farmer, and a member of Camkada. JNZ extends sympathy to Eric's family.


Medal Success At OJU World Cup

A NZL team of 13 competitors competed at the OJU Continental Cup in Wollongong over the weekend.

Medals success went to Jason Koster (CAN CA) gold -100kg; Moira de Villiers (CAN CA) silver -70kg, Ivica Pavlinic (MET WB) bronze -81kg, and Justine Bishop (NJC AK) bronze -52kg.


In addition, valuable IJF ranking points were also obtained by; Darcina Manuael (GIS EC) 5th -57kg; Ockert Steyn (HEN WB) 7th -81kg, and Ashley Porter (WAI WN) 7th -63kg.

NZL Success At Pan-Pacific Masters

After their recent success at the National Kata Championships in Christchurch, Alan Hoverd (BUD WN) and Colin Berry (BUD WN)competed with success at the 9th Pan Pacific Masters Games held in the Gold Coast from 1- 9 November.

The pair won gold in both Ju-no-Kata and Katame-no-kata, while Alan also picked up an additional silver, pairing up with Australian Jennifer Beaton for Ju-no-Kata after her partner got injured in the morning's Shiai.

NZL Development Team To AIS

JNZ sent a 15 strong athlete squad to the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra from September 27 to October 4. Our young athletes were exposed to good quality judo training, sport science testing and guest coaching tuition from Sensei Kosei Inoue.
A great week of hard intensive training with the Australian Junior and Senior Teams, Japanese male and female high school teams and the Senior Mens Japanese Team.  Our young judoka lived among other professional athletes, and really got a taste of the life of training full time. A trip our young ones will never forget.

National Technical Examination Weekend

The NTEW was held at Can Am Ju in Christchurch on the 4th and 5th October, and is an annual event run by the Grading Commission. It is used to qualify dan gradings from Shodan upwards. The weekend consists of a Technical exam on Saturday (carried out in 4 parts over 6 hours), and the Kata exam / presentation on Sunday.

Congratulations go to the new Shodans; Andrew MacDonald (BLE CD), Darren Webb (MAI CA), Ron Craft (REN SO), who worked very hard over the two days to pass both the Technical exam and the Kata requirements. James Entwistle (CAN CA) also took the opportunity to successfully present his Nage no Kata to achieve Shodan.

Stefan Heinrich (MOT CD) successfully completed the Technical Exam component for his Ni-dan and is planning to present his Katame no Kata in the near future.
