Obituary - Ted Lonergan
Tuesday, 05 January 2016 07:47

Judo NZ joins Judokwai in mourning the passing of JNH Life member and former club President Ted Lonergan.

He started with Judokwai in the early 50's and was in the first ever JNZ team which competed at the first Oceania Champs which were held at the Auckland YMCA in 1965 and was also in the team that fought in the second Oceania’s in North Sydney in 1966.

Ted is described by those who knew him as one of life’s gentleman off the mat, but a ‘tough’ competitor on the mat.

He was a well respected and skillful Judoka who was responsible for developing many of Judo NZ’s champions from the late 1950’s to the early 1970’s.

Our condolences to Ted's family and friends.

Please have a safe, restful, and enjoyable holiday period, and get set for a successful 2016 Judo year.

OJU Continental Cup Team
Tuesday, 03 November 2015 08:11

The NZL Team selected to compete at the OJU Continental Cup event being held in Wollongong will be chasing valuable IJF World Ranking points. For a number in the team this will be a crucial opportunity to assist in meeting criteria for 2016 Olympic selections.

However, with not long left in the qualifying period many countries are also chasing points so very strong fields in most categories are expected.

The event runs over 2 days (13-14 November) and concludes with a training day. We wish the whole team all the best for this competition.

The team that has accepted selection is attached;

New Patron For JNZ
Thursday, 01 October 2015 08:34

Following the sad passing last year of our long term Patron (Joe McManemin) the Congress recently elected his successor.

JNZ's new Patron is Rob Waddell. In addition to being an Olympic and World champion, America's Cup grinder, and Chef de Mission for the 2014 Commonwealth Games (where he showed great interest in and support for the NZL Judo team) and 2016 Olympics, Rob is a shodan and was a member of Henkada club.

We look forward to having Rob re-involved with Judo, and seeing him at events amongst his busy schedule.

Judo Now "Core" To Commonwealth Games
Tuesday, 08 September 2015 17:14

The Commonwelath Games Federation have just voted to include an additional 6 sports as "core" events for all events from 2022, including Judo.

We are now one of 16 sports that will be on every Commonwealth Games program starting with Durban in 2022.

This decision was made at the CGF General Assembly which is currently being held in Auckland.

Judo first made an appearance at the 1990 Games held in Auckland, and then not until 2002 in Manchester, and again last year in Glasgow. Judo is not included for the 2018 Gold Coast Games, but we will then be a permanent fixture on the program.

This decision provides our athletes with certainty and allows them to plan and prepare for this achievable four yearly target.
