Auckland International Success

The 8th Auckland International Open was completed over the weekend, with over 400 entries again. All 6 countries and 7 Areas had athletes winning titles at the event. A feature was the RAF vs ANZAC Combined Services Teams event, won 6-2 by the RAF. OJU Scholarships

The OJU have announced the provision of three athlete scholarships to the value of US$5000 each. Athletes wishing to apply for these scholarships must complete the attached application form and send supporting documents to the High Performance Director before 20 May 2010. This is another opportunity to further develop judo skills and experience for our top players.

NZ Success In England

Mahana Clutha (CAN CA) attained a bronze medal at the English Senior Championships held over the weekend of 20-21 March. Mahana competed in the -63kg category, and repeated her podium finish of 2009 in the same event. Congratulations Mahana.

 
IJF Scholarships

The nominations of two New Zealand judoka have been approved by the OJU to attend the IJF Olympic Training Centre in Paris. Moira de Villiers (NJC AK) and Sean Choi (MET WB) will attend the centre on a full time basis for advanced training and as a base for European competitions leading into the 2012 Olympics (should they qualify). This is a fantastic opportunity for these young athletes, and we wish them well.

 
JNZ Rule Interpretations

Following the recent (contentious) IJF rule changes, the JNZ Technical Directorate have approved a modified implementation of these rules on a trial basis. The Sporting Code will be updated at the completion of the trial (after the last Area Open in 2010).

NZ Success At Hong Kong Open

Sean Choi (MET WB) gained a bronze medal in the -73kg category and Ryan Dill-Russell (JNH AK) attained 5th place in the -90kg category at last weekend's Hong Kong Open. Seventeen countries competed, with good fields in most categories. New Zealand is building a good record at this event, following a gold, silver and two 7ths in last year's event. Congratulations to Sean and Ryan.

 
University Judo Club Scholarships

University Judo Club have advised the awarding of 3 month scholarships totalling $12,000 for the following 4 people; Jordan Reynolds (2 kyu, University Judo Club), Lee Calder (2 Dan, Western Judo Academy), Terry Ter-Lun Kung (2 kyu, University Judo Club), and Tim Brew (1 Dan, Gisborne Judo Club).

RAF To Compete At Auckland International Open

The Royal Air Force are sending a team to compete at this year's AIO. The tour is being co-ordinated locally by Squadron Leader Murray Simons of Upper Hutt City Judo Club. They have plans to attend ANZAC day services prior to the event.

AJA Sports Director, Debbie Downing, reports that the attendance by another country is great news for the event and there are plans to host an RAF vs ANZAC Combined Services teams contest on the Sunday morning.

Competition Rules Seminars

Two seminars have been scheduled to outline the recent changes to the IJF contest rules, the way in which they are being interpreted in international events, and the JNZ application of these rules for this year's domestic program.

 It is strongly recommended that coaches, competitors, and referees attend one of these seminars in preparation for this year's competitive season.

JNZ Points Ranking Lists

2010 Commonwealth Championships Success

New Zealand only had one representative at this year's Commonwealth Championships held in Singapore recently. Perth based Lee Bronkhorst competed in the combined -50 / -56kg category in both the Junior Mens and Senior Mens diivisions, gaining bronze medals in both. Congratulations Lee.

 
New IJF Competition Rules - Update

While recently attending the IJF World Masters event in Suwon, Korea as an invited referee, JNZ President David Browne attended the referees meeting where the main point of discussion centred on the new publicised hansokumake interpretations, particularly those involving a cross-grip.

In addition to being instructed to award shido if a cross-grip is taken and not immediately used to attack (ie; no 5 second allowance as for other non-standard grips), the IJF Referees Commission advise that the following examples from the 60 Clip Video Samples (refer previous news item) are now to be excluded; 23,25,27,29,31,39,40,44,46,47,49,50,51,53.

 
New International Rule Changes

The IJF have anounced further changes to the contest rules to apply from 1 January, 2010. The controversial changes result in direct Hansoku-make for certain techniques applied with the hands to the opponents legs. A link to videos of examples of the application of the new rules on the IJF website is attached.
