We understand that many of our fellow JNZ members are experiencing difficulty and worry after the recent (and ongoing) earthquakes in the region. Blind Judoka Makes Front Page

Dr Jonathan Godfrey (PMN NW) made front page news in the Dominion last week. In addition, Jonathan was successful at last weekend's North island Championships, winning gold in the Masters -90kg (30 -39 years). A truly inspirational story, demonstarting that Judo provides opportunities for all.

 Haley Baxter (KAI CA) has gained a silver medal at the Youth Olympics as part of the successful Team Belgrade in the mixed country teams event at the Singapore Youth Olympics.

 NZL representative Haley Baxter (KAI CA) is one of only two entries from OJU at the YOG Judo event (the other being a Fijian). Haley lost her first round to Lithuania, but won her first repechage fight!

Welcome New Clubs

It is great to welcome three new clubs affiliated to JNZ - two in the South Island, and one in the Wellington Area. Central Districts have Pelorous Judo Club (PEL CD) operating in Anakiwa, Southern have Kaikorai Valley College JC (KAK SO) based in Dunedin, and Wellington have Masterton Judo Academy.

 NZL referees have been active internationally over recent months. JNZ President David Browne has been selected by the IJF to referee at the Youth Olympics in Singapore, and then at the Senior World Championships in Tokyo. Other NZ referees have also been active internationally.

The NZL Team for this year's Senior World Championships has been confirmed after last weekend's OJU Championships. The small team is comprised of Jason Koster (CAN CA) -100kg, Moira de Villiers (NJC AK) -70kg, and Sean Choi (MET WB) -73kg.

NZ Judo Player Selected For Youth Olympics

New Zealand has been allocated a place in the judo competition at the first Youth Olympics to be held in Singapore next month.


The allocated slot is in the female -63kg category and Haley Baxter (KAI CA) has been selected to represent New Zealand.

OJU Elite Athlete Scholarship

 Lee Calder (WJA AK) has been awarded one of three available OJU Elite Athlete Scholarships for 2010. This provides Lee with USD5000 to assist him in his goal of representing NZ at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Large NZL Team For OJU Championships

The players selected to represent New Zealand at the Oceania Judo Union Championships to be held in Canberra in August have just confirmed acceptance of their selections. 


The team comprises Cadet, Junior, and Senior categories and will begin their tour with squad training in Sydney prior to the event.

Kiwi Success In London

Kiwi Mahana Clutha competed and won silver at the London International Tournament recently. 

The event was held at the Excel Centre, which provided an excellent opportunity to fight in what will be the venue for Judo at the London 2012 games.

Sad Losses

 Judo New Zealand and the judo world have lost two friends in the past week.

On 25 May Mr Francois Besson (right), IJF Sports Director died at the age of 63, and on 26 May New Zealand's representative at the first official World Championships (Tokyo 1956) Mr Feiko Sjoerds died age 79.
