NZL Results OJU World Cup

Day one of the 2010 Oceania World Cup being held in Samoa saw 6 NZL team members in medal fights.

18 countries are competing in this year's event, held in hot, humid conditions in Apia.

Coaching Course

The second of the revised C2 Coaching Courses will be held in Wellington on 20-21 November. This follows the successful initial course held earlier this month in Christchurch. Note that this program is different from previous C@ courses, and is well worth attending even if you already have the C2 qualification.

NZL Team To Compete At OJU World Cup

The final selections have been confirmed for the NZL Team to compete at the OJU World Cup event to be held in Samoa, 12-13 November 2010.

This event attracts world ranking points that count for 2012 Olympic selection. Because of this, some tough competition is expected. To date entries have been received from 20 countries, including Russia, Hungary, USA, Canada, and Slovakia.

Kiwi Success In Scotland

Mark Brewer (MOT CD) achieved a podium finish with second place in the -81kg category at the Scottish Open. Mark has been training in Europe and the UK for the past two years, and competes in the Swedish Open this weekend before returning to our part of the world to compete at the OJU World Cup in November.

New JNZ Board Members Elected

Two new JNZ Board of Directors members were elected at the recent JNZ Congress. Doug Lloyd (KOI WN) fills the position left vacant after the passing of Chris Purcell, and Naomi Spinks (CHR CA) was elected to replace Joy Williams who did not stand for re-election.

We wish the new Board Members well for their governance duties, and thank Joy for her work as part of the first JNZ Board of Directors.

NZL Success At Junior Worlds

 New Zealand had two representatives at this year's Junior World Championships held in Agidir, Morocco. Both fought outstandingly and gained very creditable results!

The Junior World Championships are being held in Agidir, Morocco this weekend with two NZL representatives competing.

Darcina Manuel (GIS EC) competes in the -57kg category and Lee Bronkhorst (MET WB) will be taking the mat in the -55kg category.

NZ Champs - Limited Edition T Shirt

A limited edition T-Shirt will be available to commemorate the 2010 Chris Purcell Memorial NZ Championships to be held over Labour Weekend. These T-Shirts are being marketed by Renshuden Judo Club and are approved by JNZ. They will only be available through mail order using the attached form.

OJU Kata Championships

Five members from JNZ attended the OJU Kata Seminar and competed in the OJU Championships in Sydney in September. The seminar attracted a large group of Kata enthusiasts and included instruction from high grades sent from the Kodokan.JNZ members achieved some very good results .

Masters Success in Japan

A small (but potent) team competed at the Asian masters event held last weekend in Japan. Competitors compete in age restricted categories, and results included 3 gold, 1 silver, and 3 bronze medals.

Revised Coaching Course

The JNZ C2 Coaching Course is in the process of being revised. The first of the new courses will be held in Christchurch on 9-10 October, 2010, with the second in Wellington on 20-21 November. The program gives more emphasis to practical coaching of youth and junior members.

The IJF announced prior to the 2010 Senior World Championships the affiliation of the 200th national judo federation to the international body. In addition, 111 of these countries competed at this year's World Championships, which had in excess of 800 competitors (restricted to 2 per country in each category).

Canterbury Area Director Graeme Spinks stands in a crack in front of his house! We understand that many of our fellow JNZ members are experiencing difficulty and worry after the recent (and ongoing) earthquakes in the region. I am sure all members are thinking of all those affected by these events, and hope that things return to normal as quickly as possible.
