NZL OJU Results

NZL added two more titles on Day 2 of the OJU Championships. Anton Hammond (NJC AK) won the CM-81 category, and Liam Closey (NJC AK) took the CM-55 title.

Despite a much smaller team at this years event (25 players), NZL finished with a total of 26 medals (5 gold, 7 silver, and 14 bronze).

NZL Take Three Titles On Day One

Day One of the OJU Championship resulted in three golds for the NZL Team.

Sean Choi (MET WB) won the SM-73 title, Moira De Villiers (NJC AK) defended her SW-70 title, and Darcina Manuel (GIS EC) won the JW-57 event.

In addition, the team took 4 silver and 9 bronze medals. Day Two includes the Junior and Cadet Men, and the Mens and Womens Team event.

The preliminary rounds on day one of the OJU Championships in Tahiti have been completed in sweltering conditions.


Senior Men and all Womens categories were fought, and all NZL competitors are now contesting for medals in this afternoon's finals block.

2011 Nationals - President's Message

As you are all aware the earthquake in Christchurch has caused us to re-evaluate the appropriateness of holding the 2011 National Championships in Christchurch. I would like to thank all of you who took the time to give me your views on the matter.

From this feedback it was quite apparent that many would not attend the Nationals if it remained in Christchurch. Added to this is the uncertainty over accommodation because of infrastructure issues.

Air Ticket For Tahiti

Due to unforseen circumstances, an opportunity exists to purchase a ticket to attend the OJU Championships in Tahiti.

These are hard to get this time of year as it is peak holiday season. The travel period is 13 April, returning NZ on 19 April.

NZL Team For OJU Championships

The OJU Championships will be fought in Tahiti in April, including Cadet, Junior, and Senior divisions, and a team event.

From the initial selections, a team of 25 athletes have accepted their selections.

2011 National Championships

We are fielding questions about the viability of holding this years Nationals in Christchurch following the earthquake.

At this stage no decision has been made and the issue will be reviewed with local Canterbury Area officials at the beginning of next week by which stage we hope to have a better picture of the capability of Christchurch to hold the event.

In the meantime we suggest you hold off making any travel booking to Christchurch until the issue is resolved.

Earthquake Update

To date we have had no reports of injury to any of our members, which is great news! Communication remains difficult for many, but we hope that "no news is good news"!

We have had some reports of damage to dojos, and no doubt to members' property.

Christchurch Earthquake

A terrible tragedy has hit Christchurch City and surrounding areas and the thoughts of the New Zealand judo community are with our Canterbury colleagues. The extended Spinks family are all ok and JNZ Board member Naomi Spinks has agreed to act as our liaison person in Christchurch. As she hears judo people are safe she will post the news on her Facebook page. Canterbury judo people should post that they are OK on Naomi's Facebook page.
