2012 National Training Camp

The first National Training Camp for 2012 is scheduled for 17 -19 February in Wanganui. This is a COMPULSORY camp for all Cadets, Junior Men & Women, and Seniors wishing to be selected for the OJU Championships in April.

The 2011 OJU World Cup lived up to expectations of being the best event in its 3 year history, with 174 competitors from 37 countries competing.


The small NZL team fought well, with 4 athletes gaining valuable World Ranking points.

2011 Dan Promotions

During 2011 twenty eight Dan promotions were awarded by Judo New Zealand. These were awarded in recognition of increases in skill and knowledge, and for services to Judo in New Zealand.

Judo On Sky Sport

The OJU have arranged for a series of highlights from recent top world competitions to be aired on Sky TV over the next few weeks. The 30 minute programs are commentated by former world champion Neil Adams. Each episode is repeated a number of times, and may possibly be re-run in the new year.

Junior World Championships Selection

Marco Nienaber (NJC AK) has been selected to compete at this year's Junior World Championships to be held in Capetown in November. The only other 2 players who met the selection criteria are both unavailable due to recent knee operations!

Marco, who will compete in the -81kg category, is currently training in Japan in preparation for the event. Good luck Marco!

Double Olympic Champion In NZ

Double Olympic and 4 time World Champion David Douillet paid a quick visit to NZ as the French Minister of Sport during the Rugby World Cup final.

 Teamsports Adidas will have a retail stand at the NZ Championships. As a special offer, they will be offering Adidas judogi at 50% off RRP for the entire weekend. In order to recieve the discount, a "trade-in" of a clean, re-usable judogi is required. These will be donated to selected OJU member countries to assist the development of judo in our region.

AIS Experience A Success

As earlier reported, a small team of young athletes attended the Australian Institute of Sport together with the Australian Junior and Cadet squads as part of their development.

Commonwealth Championships Masters category

Information outlining the application process to be considered for selection to compete in the Masters category at the  2012 Commonwealth Championships to be held in Wales has been sent to all clubs.


Any players over the age of 30 who would like to be considered for selection for this event must get their deposit and application to the NTD by 23 October.

More Success In World Cups

Jason Koster (CAN CA) had his best result of the year with a 7th place finish at the Azerbaijan World Cup held last weekend in Baku.

Jason has almost finished his stay at the IJF Olympic Training facility in Paris before returning home to prepare for the OJU World Cup in November.

World Judo Day

The IJF have announced that 28 October will be known as "World Judo Day". This date coincides with Jigoro Kano's birthdate (1860) and falls the day before our National Championships. The theme for the first World Judo Day is "Respect". Information about this initiative can be found at, including some ideas on how your club may celebrate this important day.

NZL Team For 2011 OJU World Cup

A small NZL team have accepted their selection to compete at the 2011 OJU World Cup to be held in Apia, Samoa on 11-12 November.

The level of competition is expected to be very high this year, with many athletes chasing IJF World Ranking points to qualify for next year's Olympics. To date 22 countries have advised entries.

Applications For Selection Invited

Applications are requested from those wishing to be considered for selection to compete in the 2012 Commonwealth Championships to be held in January in Cardiff, Wales.


Applications are available to members of the National Squad in the Cadet, Junior, and Senior Men and Women categories. Note that the deadline for applications is 20 October (with deposit) to the JNZ High Performance Director.

Success At Italian World Cup

Moira de Villiers (NJC AK) placed 5th at the Italian World Cup event held in Rome last weekend, losing her bronze medal fight by waza-ari to an Italian player.

Moira is demonstarting promising form after her second year at the Olympic Training facility in Paris, and hopefully this will continue as she competes in the Belarus World Cup this weekend, and then the OJU World Cup in Samoa, chasing vital wins for Olympic consideration.

JNZ Development Team at the AIS

 A small group of young players are currently training at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, with the Australian Cadet and Junior squads. They are in camp for 5 days, accompanied by coach Naomi Spinks (PHO CA).
