All Japan High Grade Shiai

Rick Littlewood (UNI AK) recently took part in the All Japan High Grade Shiai held at the Kodokan. Rick reports an entry of 1450 5th Dan and above requiring the use of 2 floors at the Kodokan in addition to the main dojo!

Rick advises that he swiftly dealt with his opponent, and encourages more JNZ members to enter next year.

NZL Team OJU Results

The NZL Team completed a good OJU tournament with 31 medals (10 Gold, 9 Silver, and 12 Bronze). This total includes the teams event where the NZL Women won gold and the Men bronze.

Congratulations to all the athletes and coaching / management team.

2012 OJU Championships Team

The New Zealand Team will compete at the 2012 OJU Championships in Cairns on April 29th and 30th. The event consists of Cadets, Junior and Senior age groups and New Zealand will be represented by a team of 38 athletes across all groups.

Auckland Technical Skills Workshop

JNZ and AJA are providing a Level 1 Technical Skills Workshop in Auckland on 25-26 February.

This workshop is aimed at coaches (3rd kyu and above) responsible for teaching and/or grading the JNZ Syllabus up to and including 3rd kyu level.

NZL Double Gold

NZL had only 2 entries at the 2012 Commonwealth Championships held in Cardiff, Wales in late January, but achieved a 100% success rate.

Jason Koster (CAN CA) took out the -100kg title, and Moira de Villiers (NJC AK) won the -70kg category. Both now continue competing and training in Europe in an attempt to gain Olympic qualifying points.

Success At Japanese Masters

A small but successful team competed in the Masters Championships in Katsuura, Japan in November.

Kiki Velloza (GIS EC) had a particularly busy event, competing, refereeing, and also entering the kata competition.

NZL Team Management Positions

The 2012 OJU Championships will be held in Cairns at the end of April 2012. JNZ are seeking applications for Team Manager and/or Assistant Team Manager for the anticipated large NZL team.

Anyone interested in applying for a team management position for this event are requested to complete the attached application form and send it to JNZ by 12 January, 2012.

2012 National Training Camp

The first National Training Camp for 2012 is scheduled for 17 -19 February in Wanganui. This is a COMPULSORY camp for all Cadets, Junior Men & Women, and Seniors wishing to be selected for the OJU Championships in April.

The 2011 OJU World Cup lived up to expectations of being the best event in its 3 year history, with 174 competitors from 37 countries competing.


The small NZL team fought well, with 4 athletes gaining valuable World Ranking points.
