Fight For Gold First Stage Funding

The Board of JNZ is pleased to announce the approval of the first stage of funding in support of the Fight for Gold project that will lead to New Zealanders winning medals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.

In the first stage, a total of $10,000 is available to be shared among players who are strong prospects for Glasgow.

NZL Team Management Positions

JNZ invites applications from those with the interest and ability in being involved in Team Management for 2013 supported tours.

The deadline for the applications is 18 January, 2013.


At this stage, the supported events for 2013 are likely to include the OJU Continental Championships (Cairns, April), and OJU Continental Cup (Apia, November).

2013 JNZ National Camp Information

The first National Training Camp will be held in Wanganui, 22 - 24 February 2013.

This is a compulsory event for anyone wishing to be considered for selection for the 2013 OJU Continental Championships to be held in Cairns in April.

The details and application form have been forwarded to all clubs, and are also attched for your information. Please note deadlines and address for application and fees.

IJF Proposes Radical Rule Changes

The IJF have announced a series of "experimental" rule changes following the Olympic Games review. Some of these are controversial and radical, but will be in force for all IJF events (including OJU Continental Championship) for 2013. Changes have also been made to the allocation of World Ranking Points.


The JNZ Sports Commission will be analysing the proposed changes to determine the extent of there introduction into events held in New Zealand. These will be introduced prior to the Area Opens.

Young Judoka Wins Award

Joss Traub (KOI WN) won the Dominion Post Wellington College Judo Sports Person of the Year for the second year in a row recently. The overall winner of 2012 Sportsman of the Year was football's Scott Basalaj.

Great recognition for a hard working young athlete - well done Joss!

OJU Kata Succes

The OJU Spring Kata Course and OJU Kata Championships were held in Sydney recently.

NZL pair Bram Kukler (NSA AK) and Keith Salmon (JNH AK) gained a silver medal in the Goshin Jitsu, while Alan Hoverd (BUD WN) and Colin Berry (BUD WN) place third in the Katame No Kata. The event was dominated by Australia.

Bill Vincent, JNZ Kata Director, stated that the course was of a very high standard and encourages more to attend the next event in order to advance their technical skill and knowledge.

Junior Sportswoman of the Year

Monique Dekkers (TAU WB) was recently named the Bay of Plenty Junior Sportswoman of the Year.

She was unable to accept her award in person as she was part of the NZL team competing in the OJU World Cup in Samoa.

Congratulations Monique for this well deserved public recognition.

NZL Team Performs Well At OJU World Cup

The NZL team have fought very well at the 2012 OJU World Cup, finishing third on the medal table (behind GBR and RUS, and ahead of Australia).

Gold medals were won by Tim Slyfield (UNI AK) -100, and Moira de Villiers (JNH AK) -70. Silver medals went to Adrian Leat (JNH AK) -73 and Jason Koster (CAN CA) -100. Bronze medals to Patti Grogan (GIS EC) -52, Adel van der Walt (WJA AK) -57, Darcina Manuel (GIS EC) -57, and Mark Brewer (MOT CD) -81.

Many more team members picked up valuable World Ranking points which will assist them in meeting selection criteria for the 2013 Commonwealth Games.

Congratulations to all team members.

NZL OJU World Cup Team

The NZL team to compete at this year's OJU World Cup event to be held in Samoa from 14-17 November has been finalised and is attached.

This is an important event for our atletes who hope to qualify for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, as valuable IJF World Ranking points are available.

The event includes senior category only, and has attracted entries this year from countries including Russia, USA, Great Britain, Canada, Hungary, and many others.

Good luck to the team of 12 women and 18 men!

Kiwis Medal At Sydney International

A small group of NZ players competed at the Sydney International, with good results.

Jakob Teneti (GIS EC) won gold in the Senior Boys -60, Fletcher Honey (GIS EC) silver in SB -55, Patti Grogan (GIS EC) silver in Senior Women -57, Antoine Rahier (WCC NW) bronze in both Cadet and Junior Men -60, Shawnee Felton (MET WB) bronze in Junior Women -63. Dylan Leney (WCC NW) placed 5th in Cadet Men -66.

The team to represent NZL at the OJU World Cup in Samoa is in the process of being selected and notified.

In addition, a number of players are still under consideration and their selection will be dependent on performances at remaining points ranking events leading up to the event and other factor including the availability of places due to acceptance or declining of selection of other players.

Coaches and/or selectors will be in communication with these players regarding this.

The selectors have requested that the attached is communicated to players / coaches who may still be in contention that have not been contacted directly.

A final team will be published as soon as acceptance from players is confirmed.
