Littlewood Success in Japan

Rick Littlewood (UNI AK) recently attended his 25th Kodokan High Grade Masters tournament, winning his fight.

He states that over 1500 high-grade (5th dan and above) masters entrants were involved in this year's shiai at the Kodokan.

JNZ Board Appointment

The JNZ Board of Directors are pleased to announce the appointment of Jim McPhee as a Board Member.

Jim takes up this new position after many years service to judo in New Zealand, most recently as National Technical Director.

JNZ Welcomes Three New Clubs

JNZ is very pleased to welcome three new clubs who have affiliated for 2013.

The new clubs are; Westside Judo Club (WJC CA), Seibukan Judo Club (SEI CA) in Christchurch being run by Mark Nugent and Ren Sadlier respectively, and Satori Judo Club (SJC SO) based in Cromwell being run by David Fitzgerald.

We welcome all these new clubs and wish them every success.

Tauranga National Training Camp

The camp will be held in Tauranga in conjunction with the WBOP Open.

Outstanding OJU Results For Team NZL

The NZL Team performed very strongly at the 2013 OJU Continental Championships completed this weekend in Cairns, Australia.

The team of 43 athletes won a total of 35 medals between them, over the three divisions. This is the best medal hall for a NZL team at this event for quite some time (if not ever).

Of particular note, the Senior Mens and Womens squads were in devastating form.

National Training Camp Tauranga

The next opportunity to train with a large group of players that you don't normally have the chance to learn from is the second National Training Camp to be held in Tauranga.

The event will run in conjunction with the Waikato Bay of Plenty Open over Queen's Birthday weekend.

New National Technical Director

After interviewing a small number of highly qualified applicants, the JNZ Board of Directors are please to confirm the appointment of Brent Cooper (HOW AK) to the position of National Technical Director.

Brent (7th Dan) has previously held numerous roles within JNZ, including National Coach and acting CEO. He takes up his duties on 1 April, following the resignation of Jim McPhee.

We wish Brent all the best in his new role.

NZL are sending a large team of Cadets, Juniors, and Seniors to the 2013 OJU Continental Championships, despite increased restrictions on entry numbers for the Senior categories.

The team list for those who have confirmed their accceptance in the team is attached.

We wish the team all the best for this important international event.

Judo At Kids Fest

On Sunday 3 March the annual Kids Fest was held in Christchurch.  Judo Canterbury put on a ‘try judo’ event and although the start to the day was slow that soon changed after lunch when it became very busy.  A large number of kids came on the mat to try judo, which at times became hectic with all rolling around, grappling and having plenty of fun.

Pictured is Liam Nugent (WJC CA) helping out on the mat, with Mark Nugent (CA Area Director) keeping an eye out for recruits.

IJF Rule Changes - Pictorial Guide

The IJF experimental rule changes are in effect and will be used internationally including this year's OJU Continental Championships in Cairns.

JNZ have adopted the majority of these changes - with some amendments as advised. These will be used at all domestic events from Area Opens and above.

Attached is a p[ictorial guide supplied by the iJF to assist in clarifying some of the changes. This can also be found on the JNZ website in the High Performance section of the Documents menu.

NZL International Successes

A number of JNZ members were competing in two international events over the weekend, and many achieved podium positions.

A small team compted at the Hong Kong International Open, and another group at the Queensland International Open, achieving a total of 2 gold, 3 silver, and 3 bronze medals.

Tim Slyfield (UNI AK) followed up his OJU World Cup victory by winning the HK International -100kg title in a field that icluded players from Japan, China, and Korea.

Fight For Gold First Stage Funding

JNZ is pleased to announce that five of our members have received grants from the JNZ "Fight for Gold" funds.

This fund has been established by JNZ to assist prospective players in their aspiration to compete in the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

$1000 has been awarded to each of the following players to assist with their offshore training in preparation for the OJU Championships in Cairns in April. This is an important selection event for the Glasgow games.

Grant recipients are Darcina Manuel, Moira de Villiers, Ivica Pavlinic, Mark Brewer and Jason Koster. Congratulations to each of the recipients.

2013 Kata World Championships

The 2013 IJF Kata World Championships have been scheduled for 19-20 October in Kyoto, Japan.

This is the first time that the event has been held outside Europe, and the ancient capital of Japan will make an excellent backdrop for this event.

Amended OJU Selection Criteria

The OJU have just advised that they will be relaxing the number of entries per category for Cadet and Junior divisions at this year's OJU Continental Championships.

Instead of 2 per category with a maximum team size of 10, countries can now enter 3 per category.


There is no change to size of Senior team (ie max 2 per category, no more than 9 per team). Updated selection criteria attached.
