NZL Selection For Cadet World Championships

After outstanding performances at the OJU Championships where he won the Junior Men -60kg category and placed 2nd in the Cadet division, James Entwistle (CAN CA) has accepted selection for the Cadet World Championships.

James will leave for the Miami based event early in August. All the best James.

NZL Team To World Championships

One of the larger teams for some time has been selected to represent NZL at the Senior Worlds in Rio at the end of August.

The NZL Mens team will also compete in the World Team Championships - one of only 16 teams - following their victory at the OJU Championships

The family of Yuichi Tanimura who was unfortuantely injured while competing earlier this year, wish to thank all individual members and clubs who have generously donated money and best wishes.

The recent fund-raising event at Can-Am-Ju saw over 30 people on the mat, and combined with other donations from around the country raised over $1600.

Donations can still be made to the account number provided in the earlier news item.

Fund Raising Event

Many of you will be aware of the accident that occurred at the Wellington Open recently, involving one of our members.

To support Yuichi and his family, Can-Am-Ju are hosting a fund-raising training session involving newaza, grapling, and groundwork lead by Jason Koster and supported by other coaches.

The session will cater for all levels, cost of the session (to be held at Can-Am-Ju at 5pm on Sunday 16 June) will be $5 (participants and spectators).

JNZ Welcomes Another Four New Clubs

An additional four new clubs have affiliated with Judo New Zealand for 2013, all in the Auckland Area.

We welcome; Big Judo (BIG AK) run by Ben Stallworthy; Onehunga BJJ and Judo Club (OBJ AK) run by Stuart Mitchell; Auckland Police Judo Club (APJ AK) run by Craig Cartwright; and AUT Martial Arts (AMA AK) run by Jordan Reynolds.

JNZ wishes these new clubs well in developing successful Judo clubs.

Littlewood Success in Japan

Rick Littlewood (UNI AK) recently attended his 25th Kodokan High Grade Masters tournament, winning his fight.

He states that over 1500 high-grade (5th dan and above) masters entrants were involved in this year's shiai at the Kodokan.

JNZ Board Appointment

Jim takes up this new position after many years service to judo in New Zealand, most recently as National Technical Director.

JNZ Welcomes Three New Clubs

JNZ is very pleased to welcome three new clubs who have affiliated for 2013.

The new clubs are; Westside Judo Club (WJC CA), Seibukan Judo Club (SEI CA) in Christchurch being run by Mark Nugent and Ren Sadlier respectively, and Satori Judo Club (SJC SO) based in Cromwell being run by David Fitzgerald.

We welcome all these new clubs and wish them every success.

Tauranga National Training Camp

Outstanding OJU Results For Team NZL

The NZL Team performed very strongly at the 2013 OJU Continental Championships completed this weekend in Cairns, Australia.

The team of 43 athletes won a total of 35 medals between them, over the three divisions. This is the best medal hall for a NZL team at this event for quite some time (if not ever).

Of particular note, the Senior Mens and Womens squads were in devastating form.

National Training Camp Tauranga

The event will run in conjunction with the Waikato Bay of Plenty Open over Queen's Birthday weekend.

New National Technical Director

After interviewing a small number of highly qualified applicants, the JNZ Board of Directors are please to confirm the appointment of Brent Cooper (HOW AK) to the position of National Technical Director.

Brent (7th Dan) has previously held numerous roles within JNZ, including National Coach and acting CEO. He takes up his duties on 1 April, following the resignation of Jim McPhee.

We wish Brent all the best in his new role.

NZL are sending a large team of Cadets, Juniors, and Seniors to the 2013 OJU Continental Championships, despite increased restrictions on entry numbers for the Senior categories.

The team list for those who have confirmed their accceptance in the team is attached.

Judo At Kids Fest

On Sunday 3 March the annual Kids Fest was held in Christchurch.  Judo Canterbury put on a ‘try judo’ event and although the start to the day was slow that soon changed after lunch when it became very busy.  A large number of kids came on the mat to try judo, which at times became hectic with all rolling around, grappling and having plenty of fun.

Pictured is Liam Nugent (WJC CA) helping out on the mat, with Mark Nugent (CA Area Director) keeping an eye out for recruits.

IJF Rule Changes - Pictorial Guide

The IJF experimental rule changes are in effect and will be used internationally including this year's OJU Continental Championships in Cairns.

JNZ have adopted the majority of these changes - with some amendments as advised. These will be used at all domestic events from Area Opens and above.

Attached is a p[ictorial guide supplied by the iJF to assist in clarifying some of the changes. This can also be found on the JNZ website in the High Performance section of the Documents menu.
