“do or not do - there is no try”
Rick Littlewood - Kodokan 8th Dan
Wednesday, 03 January 2018 11:27

On December the 13th the Kodokan promoted Rick Littlewood to 8th Dan in recognition of his achievements since attaining his Kodokan 7th Dan in 2005.

Promotion to 7th Dan or higher (men) and women’s 6th Dan or higher is decided by the International Special Council (ISC) which is the supreme council meeting at Kodokan to deliberate Dan promotions for foreign applicants.
This council consists of three 10th Dans (Abe Sensei, Osawa Sensei and Daigo Sensei) and a 9th Dan (Matsushita Sensei) and the Chairman is Mr. Uemura, President of the Kodokan.

Rick's application was approved for recommendation to the Kodokan by the New Zealand Kodokan Committee (NZKC) and was submitted in March 2017.

However, as the International Special Council meets irregularly, at most only a few times a year and only when when more than one application for 7th Dan or above has been submitted from overseas applicants, Rick's application for promotion was not considered until the ISC met earlier this month.

JNZ congratulates Rick on this significant recognition of his achievement in Judo.

Internation Refereeing Success
Monday, 11 December 2017 08:24

Diane Limbrey (MET WB) completed the requirements in passing her International A referee licence at the Asian Open in Hong Kong last weekend.
To achieve this she has spent the last few years travelling the world to improve her refereeing, and to prepare for the examination.
Diane is the third NewZealand women to achieve this level, and the first in 30 years. She is the 13th NZ referee to obtain this IJF A level.

In addition, Neisha Brooking (TAU WB) and Steven Gray (MAI WB) passed their OJUB referee licence at the OJU Open held recently in Vanuatu.
At the South Pacific Mini-Games held in Vanuatu, Dave Browne (JNH AK) was Referee Commissioner, and Bryce Butterfield (MAI CA) refereed.

Congratulations to these and all our referees representing and flying the NZ flag at international level.

CD Camp
Wednesday, 25 October 2017 07:39

Central Districts Area Judo held their annual camp in Kaiteriteri on 11-13 October 2017, attended by 18 young Judoka from Blenheim, Nelson, Motueka and Granity clubs.

Fundamental judo skills were the main focus at this fully residential camp. There was an introduction to the Koshi waza set of the Nage no kata and as this was a camp for youngsters fun was a key ingredient.

Visits to the nearby beach and a Waka Ama lesson were very popular. The quiz night (including some judo questions) and film night were relaxing and complimented all the hard training and learning done during the day.

Big thanks to coaches Stefan Heinrich and Shayne Jacks, and a massive thanks to all parents, helpers and sponsors that played a part in making it happen.

The Auckland Squad attended the recent Queensland International Open, which was the largest ever with over 400 competitors - including a number of Japanese teams.

The Auckland team of 17 claimed 13 medals, which was a superb effort given a high number of “first time” international competitors, on top of hard twice daily training in Brisbane leading up to the event and an International Training Camp in the Gold Coast immediately after the event.

Auckland Coach Rob Levy (UNI AK) was one of four international coaches invited to run workshops at the International Training Camp.

Congratulations to all the team, officials, and supporters for a successful tour.
