Sporting Code amendment - disallowed techniques for Juniors
Thursday, 01 January 2009 00:00

Following a unanimous decision by the Technical Directorate, the attached change to the JNZ Sporting Code has been introduced and will be effective from 1 January, 2009.

The main reason for these changes is to encourage our young players to develop and apply sound fundamental standing Judo techniques – with kuzushi.

This strategy has already been introduced in many European countries (eg Great Britain, France, Germany) with a view to improving technical standards. Many of the recently announced IJF rule changes apparently also have the same objective.

Please note that these are not “banned” techniques – they can (and should) still be taught as part of the syllabus, player development, and in preparation for transition into Intermediate categories.

The Referees Commission will be advising coaches on how the Code will be interpreted and applied at events in the new year.

The following link provides examples in pdf format of the restricted techniques which can be used to help young players understand the changes.
