Canterbury Area Director Graeme Spinks stands in a crack in front of his house! We understand that many of our fellow JNZ members are experiencing difficulty and worry after the recent (and ongoing) earthquakes in the region. I am sure all members are thinking of all those affected by these events, and hope that things return to normal as quickly as possible.

 
Blind Judoka Makes Front Page

Dr Jonathan Godfrey (PMN NW) made front page news in the Dominion last week. In addition, Jonathan was successful at last weekend's North island Championships, winning gold in the Masters -90kg (30 -39 years). A truly inspirational story, demonstarting that Judo provides opportunities for all.

Senior World Champs - Live!

The Senior World Championships are about to get underway in Tokyo (9 September). This is the largest Senior Worlds ever, with each country now being allowed to enter 2 per category. JNZ has 3 players entered - Sean Choi (MET WB), Jason Koster (CAN CA), and Moira de Villiers (NJC AK).

The event can be watched via the IJF webcast, and the time difference makes the schedule convenient to view. To access the webcasts, click on the IJF logo below which will take you to the IJF site, then click on the "Judo TV" option on the right hand side.

 Haley Baxter (KAI CA) has gained a silver medal at the Youth Olympics as part of the successful Team Belgrade in the mixed country teams event at the Singapore Youth Olympics.

NZL Wins in Chinese Taipei

Moira de Villiers (NJC AK) has made a great start to her run into this year's Senior World Championships by winning the Senior Women -70kg title at the Chinese Taipei Open last weekend.

From this win, Moira proceeds to an event in Beijing before heading to Tokyo to compete at the Worlds, then back to Paris for more training. Congratulations Moira and good luck for the next event.
